Welcome to my reseach hub

Here I explore the intersection of languages, cultures, personalities and identities.

My work looks into how we shape new personas when we learn new languages, how cultural intelligence impacts our ability to communicate across borders, and how individuals adapt to foreign environments. Below, I share insights from my research and the frameworks I’ve developed to help both individuals and organizations thrive in multicultural and multilingual settings.

Language Alter Ego Theory

One of the central pieces of my research is the theory of Language Alter Ego (LAE), which examines how individuals develop unique personas when learning a foreign language. My research has shown that as we acquire a new language and immerse ourselves in a different culture, we begin to shape an alter ego that allows us to interact with the world in ways that may differ from our native identity.

LAE currently contains 14 blocks that reflect various cognitive, emotional, social, cultural and other dimensions of language acquisition. These blocks provide learners with the necessary building materials to construct their LAE. As learners progress through these blocks, they pass through several developmental stages, from foundational understanding at the A2 level to self-expression and adaptation at B1 and beyond. This framework not only helps individuals build linguistic competence but also supports them in becoming more adaptable and open to new cultural perspectives.

By understanding these stages, educators and language professionals can create more immersive, supportive environments that foster the development of these alter egos, ultimately enhancing language learning outcomes and cultural fluency.

Cultural Intelligence Profiles (CQ)

Cultural Intelligence (CQ) plays a crucial role in navigating today’s globalized world. I’ve developed Cultural Intelligence Profiles (CQ Profiles) to help individuals and teams assess their strengths and areas for development in intercultural communication. These profiles break down cultural intelligence into 12 distinct categories, each representing different facets of intercultural competence, such as adaptability, empathy, and decision-making in cross-cultural environments.

By understanding your CQ Profile, you can gain insight into how you interact with different cultures, which aspects of intercultural communication come naturally, and where you might need further development. This tool has been instrumental for multinational companies looking to foster stronger, more cohesive teams that can work effectively across borders.

Linguistic Intelligence (LQ) and Multilingual Proficiency

In addition to cultural intelligence, I’ve worked extensively on the concept of Linguistic Intelligence (LQ), which focuses on an individual’s ability to understand and use language in diverse contexts. Just as there are different types of intelligence, linguistic intelligence assesses not just how well someone speaks or writes in multiple languages but how they can adapt language for specific professional, social, or emotional situations.

The Linguistic Intelligence Profiles I’ve developed allow professionals, educators, and students to measure and develop their linguistic flexibility, sensitivity, and creativity. These profiles are especially useful for those working in international teams, language educators, and individuals looking to sharpen their communication skills in multilingual environments.

Acculturation Models and Integration

My research also covers Acculturation Models, focusing on how individuals adapt to new cultural environments. These models examine different paths of integration, such as assimilation, fusion, and alternation, which depend on personal backgrounds, motivations, and the cultural context. Understanding these pathways can help individuals and organizations create smoother transitions for immigrants, expatriates, or anyone entering a new cultural space.

I’ve also explored how transnationalism—maintaining connections with one’s home culture while adapting to a new one—plays a pivotal role in personal and professional integration. This research is especially relevant for companies that employ multicultural teams and for individuals who move across countries for work or study.
